Schrijven over de verschillende episodes in de carrière van The Beach Boys betekent schrijven over de onderlinge verhoudingen tussen vijf kernleden en de aanhang die er in de loop van de jaren bij kwam of al dan niet tijdelijk afviel. Het jaar 1972 is wat dat betreft een schakelpunt, het eerste jaar waarin bandleider Brian Wilson definitief kiest voor, of wordt gemanoeuvreerd in, een plek op het tweede plan, zowel in persoonlijk als creatief opzicht. Zodoende werden de twee platen die de groep in dat jaar maakte, lange tijd beschouwd als de minder interessante. Dat het tijd is daar genuanceerder tegen aan te kijken, blijkt uit de recent verschenen box...
