The Kinks bestaan zestig jaar. Opgericht in Muswell Hill, Noord-Londen, was de band al vanaf 1964 succesvol en in feite net zo relevant als The Beatles en The Rolling Stones. Niet in het minst omdat de songs van Ray Davies vaak gevatte, welsprekende en unieke commentaren op maatschappelijke en culturele ontwikkelingen waren. The Kinks konden tongue in cheek zijn maar ondertussen een bijtende boodschap brengen. Vanuit de R&B sloeg de groep al snel haar vleugels uit om zo tot bijzonder welsprekend en internationaal geliefd oeuvre te komen.
