De vijfde soloplaat van Craig Finn verschijnt ruim een jaar na Open Door Policy, het goed ontvangen album van zijn band The Hold Steady. Die plaat verscheen in turbulente tijden: de VS stonden bol van politieke en sociale onrust, om nog maar te zwijgen over de coronacrisis. In diezelfde periode, 2020, 2021, kreeg dit A Legacy of Rentals ook vorm. Voor Craig Finn was het persoonlijk ook een heftige tijd van sterfgevallen dichtbij en zijn vriendin die als verpleegster vol aan de bak moest om Covid-patiënten te helpen.
