De succesjaren van de jaren negentig punkrock bands hebben hun oorsprong een paar jaar eerder als kleine platenlabels als Epitaph en Lookout! het speelveld verbreden en ze onder hun hoede nemen. Epitaph, van Bad Religion gitarist Brett Gurewitz groeit tot de grote marktleider uit, het is echter Lookout! die baanbrekers Operation Ivy en Green Day onder hun hoede neemt. Operation Ivy oerkrachten Matt Freeman en Tim Armstrong maken een geslaagde doorstart met de skapunk van Rancid wat hun in 1995 de culthit Time Bomb oplevert.
